It was built in 1857-8 for James Couper, a local businessman. Many rooms are richly ornamented in wood, plaster and marble.

Thomson's original room decoration, based on themes from the classical world, is being uncovered and visitors may follow the progress of this continuing conservation work.

Outside there are attractive riverside grounds to explore and a small kitchen garden, planted with a range of Victorian herbs, fruit and vegetables.

Cafe, Shop & Facilities
There is a shop in the original kitchen and pantry of the house, selling gifts, sweets, food, ‘Greek’ Thomson-related goods and a wide range of architectural books. Produce from the kitchen garden is available in season, including herbs.

Teas and coffees are served in the kitchen courtyard.

Dogs are welcome in the grounds if kept on a lead.

Ample car parking is available at the rear of the house and kitchen garden.

Parking is available at the rear of the property, and there is wheelchair access at the side.

Holmwood House is fully accessible, with a lift to the first floor.

A wheelchair is available.

The grounds consist of wooded areas with grass; there are no hard surfaces. Some areas are accessible.There is an accessible toilet.

There is an audio tour and room guides in the house.

There is an inductive ear hook for the audio tour of the house.

The audio tour is available in French and German.
